Holiday season 2016 will not and should not look and feel like a holiday season any other year. Unfortunately, that is because many families are now torn apart, and many people do not know how they will be able to sit at the same table with family members who seem to have such a vastly different view on life, our country and our planet.
But this holiday season we also have a chance to channel our anger, fear, sadness and frustration into action. Inspired by the brilliant John Oliver, whose video here I strongly recommend you take the time to watch, we encourage you to do the following:
Instead of spending money on buying your friends and relatives gifts, please consider donating to one of the many charities and organizations which will be on the front lines fighting to protect our rights, freedoms and values from a hateful and bigoted administration. You can donate in your friends’ and family members’ names as your gift to them. That could work wonderfully if your friend or family member is a progressive who is overwhelmed with tough emotions right now, and it can especially work wonderfully if your friend or family member voted for the forces of evil and you are looking for a way to send them a clear message of where your values lie.
Another great idea is giving your friends and relatives subscriptions to real newspapers that practice real investigative journalism. Not only will we need our news media to be our watchdog now more than ever, but also our very fundamentally democratic freedom of the press is being threatened. Support newspapers like The New York Times, The Washington Post and ProPublica by purchasing a subscription for yourself and others. This will not only fortify our press, but will make sure that you and your loved ones (or ones who desperately need it) get your information from reliable sources who report FACTS, rather than simply from biased and unreliable social media sources.
This holiday/shopping season, please use your money for good. Use your money to help us all.
Below you will find links to articles that list the various organizations you might want to help. If you still require assistance or need ideas, guidance or help finding resources, please don’t hesitate to ask us.
And if you want to put a smile on our faces, please write to us and let us know that you donated this holiday season.
